Cortical aperiodic ‘ clock ’ enabling phase transitions at theta rates

چکیده

Brains are open thermodynamic systems, continually dissipating metabolic energy as heat in constructing spatiotemporal patterns of neural activity. Here observations on patterns of cortical oscillations are described as Prigogine’s “dissipative structures” forming at conditionally stable operating points far from equilibrium. The approach is to locate experimentally a small-signal, near-linear range in which impulse responses superpose, then to extend the analysis into nonlinear ranges by piece-wise linearization. The resulting root loci are re-interpreted as projections from a phase plane, in which the phase boundaries are plotted in terms of degree of order corresponding to volume vs. rate of energy dissipation (power) corresponding to temperature. Properties of neural microscopic activity transit across scales to macroscopic states.

Evidence from human scalp electroencephalograms of global chaotic itinerancy.

My objective of this study was to find evidence of chaotic itinerancy in human brains by means of noninvasive recording of the electroencephalogram (EEG) from the scalp of normal subjects. My premise was that chaotic itinerancy occurs in sequences of cortical states marked by state transitions that appear as temporal discontinuities in neural activity patterns. I based my study on unprecedented...

A cinematographic hypothesis of cortical dynamics in perception.

The aim of this study was to measure and classify spatial patterns in sensory cortical EEGs relating to conditioned stimuli (CSs) in order to test the hypothesis, based on clinical reports, that cortical dynamics is not continuous but operates in steps that resemble frames in a cinema. Recent advances in the application of the Hilbert Transform to intracranial recordings of the EEG in animals h...

Aperiodic phase re-setting in scalp EEG of beta-gamma oscillations by state transitions at alpha-theta rates.

We evaluated the rapid changes in regional scalp EEG synchronization in normal subjects with spatial and temporal resolution exceeding prior art 10-fold with a high spatial density array and the Hilbert transform. A curvilinear array of 64 electrodes 3 mm apart extending 18.9 cm across the scalp was used to record EEG at 200/sec. Analytic amplitude (AA) and phase (AP) were calculated at each ti...

On Neural Substrates of Cognition

Recent experiments with highresolution brain imaging techniques provide an amazing view on the complex spatio-temporal dynamics of cortical processes. There is ample of evidence pointing to frequent transitions between periods of large-scale synchronization and intermittent desynchronization at alpha-theta rates (period length of 0.1 s to 0.25s). These observations have been interpreted based o...

Fine temporal resolution of analytic phase reveals episodic synchronization by state transitions in gamma EEGs.

The analytic signal given by the Hilbert transform applied to an electroencephalographic (EEG) trace is a vector of instantaneous amplitude and phase at the temporal resolution of the digitizing interval (here 2 ms). The transform was applied after band-pass filtering for extracting the gamma band (20-80 Hz in rabbits) to time series from up to 64 EEG channels recorded simultaneously from high-...
